Our Laser Radial sailor Vasileia Carahaliou from Greece went to the World Cup Miami as the first regatta of the year 2017.
She spent 3 months on our winter base in Las Palmas in the Real Club Nautico Gran Canaria, training as much as possible with Tamas Eszes, the coach and director of Sailing Academy Gran Canaria, depending on the weather, and she was also seriously training in the gym with Matyas Toth, the physical coach of the team.
After the hard preparation we were waiting to see her performance. The result was amazing!
The regatta started on the 24th of January and lasted 6 days long, until the 29th. It’s challenging for the athletes, not easy to keep their mind focused day by day, dealing with weather changes, general recalls, actions on the water, and keeping their daily routine as well.
Vasileia was sailing very constant, out of 10 races, in 9 races she finished at top 5 places which means she was leading for 4 days, and there was only one race when she made a weak start and later she got a yellow flag, so she had to work hard to come back to the middle of the fleet.
After all, she was going into the Medal Race with 16 points lead, but she wasn’t 100% secured to win. The conditions were tricky, light and shifty wind, rain. Vasileia choosed one side and the second sailor, Evi Van Acker choosed the other side of the racing course in upwind and luckily she turned the first mark in the first position and kept her place all the way until the finish line.
